Turn Negativity into Possibilities

neg to possibilitiesA negative attitude will breed fear, frustration, and depression that will impact your productivity and relationships. For centuries philosophers, psychiatrists, and self-help books have taught us to think on the positive. And it should come as no surprise that the Bible tells us to think on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8). The question is, how do we think on what is true instead of what is negative when we are in the midst of despair or anxiousness?

3 Ways to Focus on the Positive

1. Praise God for His promises.

To have peace that guards your heart and mind, God instructs us to think on what is true with a grateful heart (Phil. 4:6-8). To do this we must meditate on God’s Word. In fact, it is only His Word that has remained true and consistent from the beginning of time. There may be different translations to help us interpret the original Greek and Hebrew, but the Bible has not changed. Furthermore, God tells you to delight and meditate on His Word to be blessed (Psalm 1:1-3).

Each morning and throughout your day, go to God with a thankful heart for His promises. Say those promises out loud and claim them as your own. Be prepared with a list of promises to refocus your thoughts on the positive. Rejoice. You have been blessed in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing when you surrender your life to Christ. Often we get focused on asking God for what we want instead of praising God for what we already have. 2. Imagine the possibilities of what God has already planned through His power at work in you.

God has blessed you with His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, and self-control through the presence of the Holy Spirit at work in you as you seek Him with all of your heart (Gal. 5:22-23, Jer. 29:11-13). The power of God is at work in you to do immeasurably more than you can ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20). What are you asking God for? What are you imagining or thinking about? This is very important. If you do not ask or imagine what God has purposed for you then you will not receive. When you follow Jesus and the Word of God is planted in you then you will ask according to His will and it will be given to you (John 15:7). The reason God answers your prayers is for you to glorify Him. Consider that God may not answer your prayers because He already knows that you will not give Him the glory and praise.

3. Do life with God’s people to prosper.

God says to avoid those who are wicked, ungodly, and mockers of God. When you hang out with God’s people you will prosper (Psalm 1:1-3). To be in relationship with God’s people you must be part of a church community. Going to church every week is great, but it’s not enough. God intended for His people to do life together. The church is a body that cannot function apart from its members. Everyone who is a follower of Jesus has been given a spiritual gift to contribute to the church body. We come together to serve in times of need, to mourn alongside those who are suffering, to encourage one another in our struggles, to teach and study God’s Word together, and to hold one another accountable to higher standard by speaking the truth in love.

God has endless possibilities for your life as you seek Him with a grateful heart proclaiming His promises, imagining His plans to prosper you with His power, and doing life with His people.

What are you grateful for?
